The High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) is a nationally representative, longitudinal study of more
than 20,000 ninth graders in 944 schools who will be followed through their secondary and postsecondary years.
The main study students were re-surveyed in 2012 when most were high school 11th graders. The study focuses
on understanding students’ trajectories from the beginning of high school into postsecondary education or the
workforce and beyond. What students decide to pursue when, why, and how are crucial questions for HSLS:09,
especially, but not solely, in regards to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses, majors, and
careers. This submission amends the clearances obtained on April 19, 2013, May 22, 2013, and September 3,
2013, for the 2013 Update of HSLS:09 sample members who were in 9th grade in the fall of 2009 (OMB# 18500852 v. 11-13), and requests approval for several strategies to improve response and to further reduce the risk of
nonresponse bias for the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) 2013 Update full scale data
collection, including extension of the data collection period and increasing the current incentive treatment. Due to
the partial government shutdown from October 1 through 16, 2013, and the associated shutdown of the systems
that host the ED/IES websites, data collection was temporarily halted effective October 1, 2013. The HSLS:09
2013 Update data collection was scheduled to end on October 31, 2013. As of October 1, a total of 15,005 of the
23,415 sample members had responded (64 percent).
