Abstract: The proposed research may help these operators to more precisely focus efforts within the mine environment to reduce respirable coal mine dust. In addition the research may help operators learn how to involve employees in decisions that affect their health. Research is necessary to understand miners' knowledge, attitude, and behaviors toward using and responding to the information displayed on their PDM. The objectives of the project are (1) to design and test an intervention to help miners use PDM feedback more effectively to reduce their exposure to respirable coal mine dust and (2) to document specific examples of ways that miners can use PDM feedback to alter their behaviors to decrease their exposure to respirable coal dust while working underground. NIOSH proposes an intervention to lower miners' respirable dust exposure levels by involving them in the interpretation of PDM feedback and the discussion of ways to change their behaviors to decrease exposure to respirable dust. This study consists of two phases. Phase 1 includes a pilot intervention in which one group (no more than 9 individuals) will serve as an experimental group and receive the intervention and accompanying instruments. Phase 2 consists of the intervention in which experimental and control groups will be assigned at each participating location.
