Thank you for your time today. My name is XX and I work with the Human Factors and Usability Group at the U.S. Census Bureau. I will be working with you today on a usability study. Our group evaluates how easy Census products are to use. When potential users, such as you, have difficulty with using the product, we have an opportunity to fix it before it is released to the public. We will use comments and experiences from you and other participants to help make improvements. We appreciate your help with this study.

Before we start, there is a form I would like you to read and sign. It explains the purpose of today’s session and your rights as a participant. It also informs you that we would like to record the session for usability evaluation. The recording will take video of the screen as you perform the task and capture audio of the session to get an accurate record of your feedback. It will be used solely for research purposes, and only those of us involved in the project will have access to the recording. Your name will not be associated with the recording or any of other data collected during the session.

Today you will be helping us evaluate some new language that we are considering using on our census materials – including on our website. After you complete the task, I will ask some questions about your experience.

[Eye tracking]

While you are performing the task, we will record where you look on the screen. In order to accurately record where your eyes look, we would like you to do a simple task that will allow the computer to find your eyes. To get the best possible data, first please situate yourself in a position that is comfortable for you. It will be important to keep your head and chair as stable as possible during the session. On the next screen, [gesture] you will see a red dot moving across the screen. Without moving your head, please follow the red dot with your eyes as it moves and keep your eyes on it as it pauses in each corner of the screen.

So that we can make sure the calibration was successful, we will do a quick task with you at two points during the session. One will be right now, and the second time will be in just a few minutes after the next part of the session. I’m going to bring up an image.
