T ITLE OF INFORMATION COLLECTION: Survey of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) INSPIRE and non-INSPIRE grantees

PURPOSE:

This online survey will measure the satisfaction of the scientific community with the submission process for interdisciplinary high risk/ high reward proposals through the INSPIRE program. As part of this effort, we will survey the census of INSPIRE Principal Investigators and a sample of Principal Investigators from other interdisciplinary and potentially transformative research projects (IDR/PTR) funded in FY 2012 and FY2013. The online survey has two central goals:.

  • To identify early challenges in carrying out INSPIRE-funded projects.

  • To determine the level of satisfaction with the INSPIRE application process.

In addition, survey topics would include suggestions for improving the solicitations and the proposal submission process, institutional barriers to doing interdisciplinary and transformative research, perceptions of the level of PTR/IDR encouraged by NSF, and how NSF could improve the INSPIRE program.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS:

All primary INSPIRE Principal Investigators from awards funded in FY 2012 and FY 2013 will be included in the survey. Principal Investigators funded through other interdisciplinary programs or core co-funded programs that also support INSPIRE awards will be surveyed for comparison.
