The provisions of the standard require
that the employer make a periodic inspection of alloy steel chain
slings at least once a year and to make and maintain a record of
the inspection. It also requires the employer to ensure that each
new, repaired or reconditioned alloy steel chain sling is proof
tested and a certification record maintained. In addition, the
standard requires the employer to maintain a record of the proof
test on wire rope slings.

OSHA is proposing to increase
the existing burden hour estimate for the collection of information
requirements specified by the Standard from 20,001 hours to 23,614
hours (a total increase of 3,613 hours). This increase in burden
hours is a result of an adjustment in the number of slings (from
1,116,667 to 1,350,000).
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
