SUBJECT:

Non-substantive change for Farm to School Census (0584-0593)

Through this memorandum, we are requesting a non-substantive change to the Farm to School
Census, OMB Control No. 0584-0593, which expires on February 29, 2016.
The Farm to School Census collects information on purchases of local foods and other farm to
school related activities from public school district School Food Authorities in the 50 United
States and the District of Columbia. USDA’s Farm to School Program uses data from the
Farm to School Census to assess farm to school programs and to set priorities for USDA
outreach and technical support, as mandated by the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act (HHFKA).
The Act requires USDA to improve access to local foods in schools and encourages
geographic diversity and equitable treatment of rural, urban, and tribal communities as it
relates to the distribution of farm to school programs.
Question 2 of the supporting statement identified this census as a one-time collection.
However, to continue the assessment of farm to school programs, the collection will occur
annually. The burden hours and responses were correctly submitted as annual estimates of
burden and therefore no change is requested to the burden estimate. The purpose of this nonsubstantive request is to modify the statement of “one-time collection” to annual.
