The basis for issuance of the Beryllium proposal is a preliminary determination by the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health that employees exposed to beryllium face a significant risk to their health at the current permissible exposure limits and that promulgating these proposed standards will substantially reduce that risk.

The proposed Standard includes collection of information requirements for: conducting worker exposure monitoring, establishing, implementing, and updating a written exposure control plans, conducting medical surveillance of workers, providing examining physicians with specific information, obtaining written physician's opinions and providing those opinions to workers and establishing and maintaining workers' exposure monitoring and medical surveillance records, and reporting employee Be sensitization results to OSHA upon request.
