BREAST CANCER AND THE ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH
PROGRAM GRANTEE SURVEY

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey for the National Institute of environmental Health Sciences
(NIEHS) Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT). We are conducting an evaluation of the Breast Cancer
and the Environment Research Program (BCERP) portfolio and are interested in finding out about your NIH funded
research through this program. It should take you about 45 minutes to complete the survey. The survey includes 8
basic categories that ask questions about:
l

Research Outputs

l

Research Use

l

Dissemination Outputs

l

Partnerships

l

Research Outcomes and Impacts

l

Research Program Goals

l

Program Support

l

Consortium

All reporting will use aggregated responses. Individual responses may be used to showcase examples or highlights of
portfolio research outputs or impacts.
If at any time you wish to provide citations for a peerreviewed publication, you only need to provide the PMIC or
PMCID. Please provide full citations, and weblinks when available, to other publications, including gray literature,
websites, and nonpeer reviewed information such as pamphlets.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Kristi Pettibone at [email protected] or at (919)
5417751.

Research Program Goals

In this section, we want to hear from you about how you think your research has helped address the specific goals of the funding opportunity
announcement.
As a reminder, the goals of the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Program are to:
l

Support a multidisciplinary network of scientists and community partners to examine the effects of environmental exposures that may
predispose a woman to breast cancer throughout her life;

l

conduct basic laboratory or epidemiological research projects focused on how geneenvironment interactions, as well as the molecular
mechanisms engaged, during specific windows of susceptibility have the potential of modifying a woman’s lifetime risk for developing
breast cancer;

l

Conduct an epidemiologic study of the timing of female pubertal events, including the onset of breast development, age at menarche,
and environmental and genetic factors that may affect pubertal maturation; and

l

Integrate scientific information on the development of the mammary gland and exposureinduced changes in order to construct public
health messages for young girls and women who are at risk for breast cancer

1. Describe the top 3 key scientific findings associated with your funded research and how
they have helped address the goals of the program.

3. Describe the impact or potential impact of these findings on the field of breast cancer
research.

Program Support

One of the primary roles of the NIH program staff is to provide support for NIH funded research programs, including hosting meetings, providing
opportunities for communication among grantees, and facilitating data sharing if needed. This section of the survey asks you to describe your
satisfaction with program support and to provide comments on ways NIH could improve our support of this program.

1. What was the most beneficial type of support you received from program staff and why
was it helpful?
5

6

2. Are there other support activities that NIH program staff could have provided that would
have facilitated your research project?

Consortiums

Your particular grant was funded as part of a research consortium. This section of the survey asks about your experience participating in the
consortium.

1. In addition to your individual grant accomplishments, what do you see as the main
accomplishments of the consortium efforts? (both methods and findings)
5
6

2. If you have a history of funding from NIH, how does your experience with this
consortium model differ from other grants you have been involved with at NIH?
5
6

3. What are as the primary benefits of funding this research through a consortium?
5
6

4. What are the primary challenges associated with funding this research through a
consortium?
5
6

5. What kinds of joint products have emerged from the consortium (e.g., joint publications,
presentations, new collaborations, concepts, shared datasets, new grants?)
5

6. Do you anticipate continuing to collaborate with any consortium members after this
grant is over?
