The information is needed to reduce the number of ship collisions with endangered northern right whales. The collection involves ships’ reporting to the Coast Guard (CG) when entering an area covered by the reporting system. |

The information is sent via INMARSAT C, TELEX, e-mail, SITOR, or voice radio. Contact details are published annually in the U.S. Coast Pilot. |
What happens when complete information is received? |
Upon notifying the CG, the ship will receive, in return, operational guidance to reduce the likelihood of collisions between themselves and northern right whales—an endangered species—in the areas that the animal frequents. |
