The Golden Crab commercial fishery has
been identified by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council as
their top priority for developing catch share programs (summary
motions from June 2010). The Council is now considering a catch
share program via Golden Crab Amendment Five. Although a recent
technical memorandum (NMFS-SEFSC-608) includes catch and
productivity analysis, there is little data on the business model
including production factors (crab pots, fuel costs etc). The
proposed economic survey would remedy that. The Golden Crab
commercial fishery was last surveyed for economic production
factors (crab pots, fuel costs etc) in 2011. The proposed economic
survey will update that. The only change from the previous form is
the deletion of a now-moot question on an old proposed management
measurement.
