Prevention Research Centers Evaluation

Purposes, Questions, and Indicators

2014-2019


Purposes

The purposes of the overall 2014-2019 Prevention Research Centers (PRC) Evaluation are:


  1. Accountability: to demonstrate PRC program public health impact and accountability to Congress, CDC leadership, partner organizations, and communities

  2. Visibility: to increase the visibility of the PRC program among internal CDC stakeholders, key national organizations, states, communities, and local leaders

  3. Transferability: to generate knowledge and share information both within and outside the PRCs

  4. Program improvement: to inform internal decision-making aimed at improving the PRC program


Evaluation Questions

  1. To what extent do the PRCs stimulate and facilitate policy, environmental and systems changes that promote public health?

  2. To what extent does the evidence developed and/or disseminated by the PRCs support and impact the efforts of health departments and other public health and community partners?

  3. To what extent do the PRCs contribute to public health workforce development?

  4. To what extent do investments in PRCs support the scalability, sustainability, and effectiveness of the outcomes resulting from community-based efforts to improve public health?


Indicators

Inputs

  1. Number of PRC partnerships with outside entities and the types of constituencies or organizations represented

  2. Resources provided by academic institution to support PRC activities

  3. Amount of annual funding for PRC’s core research projects and other leveraged research projects

  4. Actual cost of PRC’s core research project

  5. Number, percent time, and areas of expertise of PRC faculty and staff who are supported by CDC funds

  6. Number of key leadership positions filled

  7. Proportion of leadership positions filled by unique individuals

  8. PRC’s fiscal agent

  9. Type of academic institution in which the PRC is located

  10. Location of PRC in academic institution


Activities

  1. Characteristics of PRC involvement with outside entities

  2. Number and characteristics of center projects

13. Number and characteristics of PRC’s core research projects and other leveraged research projects


Outputs

14. Number of students mentored by and/or working with PRCs

15. Number of formal training programs funded or administered by PRCs

16. Number of practice and research tools developed and disseminated by PRCs

17. Number of books and book chapters by PRC-affiliated personnel

18. Number of peer-reviewed journal publications by PRC-affiliated personnel

19. Number of scientific conference presentations by PRC-affiliated personnel


Outcomes/Impact

20. Dollars leveraged by PRCs

21. Number and characteristics of policy, systems and environmental changes

22. Number of people reached by PRC projects and strategies

23. Number of PRC projects and strategies found to be effective

24. Number of PRC projects and strategies adopted outside of the original study population
