2016 Application: Norman P. Salzman Memorial Award in Virology

Eligible candidates are Postdoctoral Fellows, Research Fellows, or Clinical Fellows in intramural
NIH, CBER, or Leidos laboratories who have received their first doctoral degree no more than 6
years before November 17, 2016. Individuals who have been promoted from one of these
positions after Aug. 14, 2016 to Staff Scientist, tenure-track investigator or Assistant Clinical
Investigator also are eligible to apply. The application abstract must cover research conducted
only during one of the indicated eligible positions, under the mentorship of a single scientist
in an intramural NIH, CBER, or Leidos laboratory. Award selection will be based on the quality
and significance of the applicant's research contribution to the field of virology, with special
emphasis on the creativity and the rigor with which the research has been performed. Applications
will be judged by a committee of scientists from NIH and other institutions. The work submitted
must have been published or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, with the
applicant being first or joint-first author on the publication. Applicants who have applied in
previous years are encouraged to update their applications and resubmit, if eligible.
The overall winner will receive a $2500 cash award and will be expected to present a 20 min
talk at the Symposium; in addition, the next three top abstracts will be selected for a poster
presentation for which they will receive awards of $200.
