This provision requires the regulatory
authority to conduct periodic inspections of surface coal mining
activities, and prepare and maintain inspection reports for public
review. This information is necessary to meet the requirements of
section 517 of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of
1977 and its public participation provisions. Public review ensures
that the State is meeting the requirements of the Act and the
approved State regulatory program.
This information collection
request seeks renewed OMB approval to collect information from
State regulatory authorities relating to surface coal mining
inspections. This renewal will reduce burden estimates by 451,202
hours due to a significant reduction in the number of partial and
complete inspections conducted by States on an annual basis.
