HAWAII 2014 VEGETABLE AND MELON CROPS
The farm gate value for Hawaii’s vegetable and melon crops is estimated at $39.8 million in 2014.
Cumulative production for vegetables and melons was 44.0 million pounds. Rainfall in 2014
approached normal for most locations; however, there were still some areas that received less irrigation
than would be normal. In addition, the heavy vog had a negative effect on some crops.
The top volume‐producing vegetable crop during 2014 was head cabbage whose estimated production
was 6.67 million pounds; however, this figure is down 3.05 million pounds from the previous year.
Cucumbers were the second largest published vegetable volume crop, estimated at 5.78 million
pounds.
Most vegetables showed a decrease in production compared to the revised figures for the previous
year. However, kale showed an increase in production of 186% from the previous year to 630,000
pounds, while head lettuce showed a 95% increase in production to 1.25 million pounds. In addition,
Chinese cabbage, mustard cabbage, Oriental squash, and watercress increased production.
The leading farm gate value was for cucumbers, estimated at $4.3 million. Second is head cabbage,
estimated at $3.24 million. Leaf lettuce rounds out the top three farm gate values, at $2.9 million, though
it is down 34% from 2013’s revised value of $4.40 million.
