Yourresidentisoneof16,000people
scientificallyselectedatrandomtorepresentthe
MedicareexperiencesofotherMedicare
beneficiariesallovertheUnitedStates.Every
year,approximately1,000facilityadministrators
areinterviewedonbehalfoftheirresidents,
providinginvaluabledataabouthowMedicare
affectsbeneficiarieswhorequirelong-termcare.
What is the Medicare Current Beneficiary
Survey?

asprescribedbyTheFederalPrivacyActof1974.
TheMCBSisastudytolearnmoreaboutpeople
whouseMedicare,inorderfortheCentersfor
MedicareandMedicaidServices(CMS)and
researcherstolearnmoreaboutMedicare
beneficiariesandtheirhealthcareexperiences.
TheMCBShasbeenconductedsince1991
becausetheinformationwecollectabouthealth
andhealthcarecostsissovaluable.CMS,partof
theU.S.DepartmentofHealthandHuman
Services,sponsorsthissurveyinordertogain
valuableinformationabouthowMedicareaffects
thepeopleitserves.
Yourparticipationisvoluntary,andyour
relationshipwithprogramsadministeredbyCMS
willnotbeaffectedinanywaybywhetherornot
youparticipate.
What does this mean for my facility?
AlthoughmostinterviewsfortheMCBSoccurin
thecommunity,wealsocollectdataonindividuals
whoresideinlong-termcarefacilities.Overthe
courseofthestudy,approximately7%ofthe
MCBSsampleresidesinfacilitiesatanygiven
time.Byconductingbothcommunityandfacility
interviews,theMCBScancollectdatafrom
beneficiariesregardlessoftheirlocationand
therebymaintainacontinuousrecordoftheir
healthcarecostsandusage.
Theinterviewfocusesontheutilizationandcosts
ofthehealthcarebeingreceivedbyyourresident,
alongwithasmallsectiondescribingthe
characteristicsofyourfacility.Muchofthe
informationisabstracteddirectlyfromthe
resident’schartandwillonlyrequirealimited
amountofyourstaff’stime.
Wecollectdatathreetimesperyear,soifthe
selectedbeneficiaryremainsinyourfacilityover
anextendedperiodoftime,wemaycontactyou
forsubsequentinterviews.Forinterviewsin
facilities,aspecificfacilityquestionnaireis
administeredtocaregiversandfacilityaccounting
staffwhoarethemostknowledgeableaboutthe
individual.Noresidentsofyourfacilitywillbe
contacteddirectly.Alloftheinformationyour
