Abstract: NIOSH proposes a project to empirically understand the factors and conditions that contribute to mineworkers' safe decisions while completing job tasks. Worker perception-based `organizational values' and `personal characteristics' presumed to be important in fostering knowledge, motivation, proactive behaviors, and safety outcomes will be used. Worker perception-based constructs have a theoretical and empirical history and psychometrically tested items exist for each of them. A short survey allows for prioritization of the antecedents that have the most influence on proactive behaviors. Dominance/relative weights analysis will be used to rank order the importance of predictors in numerous regression contexts. Safety proactivity and safety compliance are the dependent variables in these regression analyses.
