Subject: Michigan Request for Assessment of Chemical Exposure (ACE) Investigation
Dear Mary Anne,
Here’s the request for an ACE Flint Rash Investigation. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Project Title: Flint Rash Investigation
Requesting Official: Dr. Jacqueline Scott, MDHHS
Lead Investigator: Dr. Jevon McFadden, MDHHS/CDC
Investigation Objectives:
1) Characterize potential rash cases (based on case interviews, medical chart review, and home water testing
conducted by EPA)
2) Develop hypotheses for potential causes of rash associated with Flint water supply
3) Make recommendations for public health interventions aimed at mitigating any future risk of rashes linked to
Flint water exposure
MDHHS has officially requested an Assessment of Chemical Exposure (ACE) for investigation of issues around persons
on Flint municipal water exposure who have complaints of current or obviously worsening skin rashes, for a duration
at this time of 4 weeks, beginning 2/22/2016.
MDHHS is specifically asking for CDC ACE assistance to characterize reported rash illness through:
1) Assisting with the ongoing Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Self-reported Rash Symptoms
and Exposure to Flint Water Survey
2) Performing medical chart reviews for survey respondents who were treated at health care facilities for their
rash
Total estimated number of surveys and chart reviews that will be done: 100
Estimated average survey time for the paperwork: 20 minutes

Sincerely,
1
