Research and development (R&D) is creative and systematic work undertaken in order to increase the stock of
knowledge — including knowledge of humankind, culture, and society — and to devise new applications of available
knowledge.

Include all R&D expenditures from your institution’s current operating funds that are separately accounted for. For
purposes of this survey, R&D includes expenditures for organized research as defined by 2 CFR 200 Appendix III and
expenditures from funds designated for research.
