BREAST CANCER AND THE ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH
PROGRAM GRANTEE SURVEY

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey for the National Institute of environmental Health Sciences 
(NIEHS) Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT). We are conducting an evaluation of the Breast Cancer 
and the Environment Research Program (BCERP) portfolio and are interested in finding out about your NIH funded 
research through this program. It should take you about 45 minutes to complete the survey. The survey includes 8

Research Program Goals

In this section, we want to hear from you about how you think your research has helped address the specific goals of the funding opportunity 
announcement.  
As a reminder, the goals of the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Program are to:  
l

Support a multidisciplinary network of scientists and community partners to examine the effects of environmental exposures that may 
predispose a woman to breast cancer throughout her life;  

l

conduct basic laboratory or epidemiological research projects focused on how gene­environment interactions, as well as the molecular 
mechanisms engaged, during specific windows of susceptibility have the potential of modifying a woman’s lifetime risk for developing 
breast cancer;  

l

Conduct an epidemiologic study of the timing of female pubertal events, including the onset of breast development, age at menarche, 
and environmental and genetic factors that may affect pubertal maturation; and  

l

Integrate scientific information on the development of the mammary gland and exposure­induced changes in order to construct public 
health messages for young girls and women who are at risk for breast cancer
