Shape1 TITLE OF INFORMATION COLLECTION: Obtaining Stakeholder and Customer Feedback on BLS’s National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS).


PURPOSE: The National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS) are a set of surveys designed to gather information at multiple points in time on the labor market activities and other significant life events of several groups of men and women. For more than four decades, NLS data have served as an important tool for economists, sociologists, and other researchers. The current request deals with obtaining feedback on NLS from key stakeholders and users of the survey data.


DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS: Known stakeholders (Geocode data users) will be e-mailed an invitation to complete the survey. In addition, a survey invitation will be placed on the NLS website and NLS bibliography page inviting users of the NLS data to participate in the survey.

FEDERAL COST: The estimated annual cost to the Federal government is $6,400 (an estimated 160 hours of work based on a GS-13/5, which is roughly $39.84 per hour, rounded to $40 per hour).

Predetermined NLS Users: We will be sending the survey via email to our Geocode data users, about 200 people who have current agreements with NLS (we anticipate a 50% response rate). In addition we will post the questionnaire on the NLS website, on our NLS information page which is hosted by our contractor. This website had 34,000 unique users in 2017, with 166,000 sessions.  We also had 7,000 unique users in 2017 of our NLS bibliography page, which is also hosted by our contractor. Based on previous experience with this type of website, we anticipate obtaining around 450 volunteer respondents over a 3-month period.
