Supporting Statement for Input from the Antarctic research community to the Antarctic Science Contract (ASC) regading community

Request for Approval under the “Generic Clearance for the Collection of Routine Customer Feedback” (OMB Control Number: 3145-0215)

TITLE OF INFORMATION COLLECTION: Input from the Antarctic research community to the Antarctic Science Contract (ASC) regarding community preferences in equipment selection.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this survey is to learn from the U.S. Antarctic research community its perception of which acoustic packages would be most beneficial for their research.

Palmer Station, along the Western Antarctic Peninsula, has recently added several Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB) to its fleet. Both vessels are equipped with sonar wells to house acoustic equipment for surveys, but there is currently only one instrument between the ships.

The funding for this has not yet been guaranteed, but ASC would like to be in the position of knowing the preference of the science community on future purchases. The survey requests information on whether community members would prefer a second Simrad EK-80 32kHz echosounder and deckbox, or upgrade the existing EK-80 with a dual frequency band. The results of this survey will be shared with NSF and used in funding decisions.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS: Researchers who have been awarded funding for projects in the Western Antarctic Peninsula in the past decade. The survey will also be shared with various NSF designees involved in funding or the science community.
