This information collection supports
the President's initiative to create opportunities to advance
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
The NASA Human Exploration Challenge/Great Moonbuggy Race is a
vehicular engineering activity that targets both high school and
college students. Participation is voluntary. It is designed to
connect classroom training to tangible activities that enable
practical application of STEM disciplines, cultivate innovative
thinking, and embrace teamwork. This event is inspired by the
original lunar rover that piloted across the Moon's surface in the
early 1970's during the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions. Many NASA
missions reapplied existing technology/reused shuttles -- adding
improvements when possible and applicable. Therefore, in the spirit
of continual improvement, and effective through this extension,
teams can now re-use vehicles from previous events, provided at
least fifty percent of the combined total structure and associated
systems have been modified or replaced. The 'NASA Form
4687/Returning Vehicle Report and Verification' was added to this
information collection for that purpose. Public participation
remains voluntary.
NASA added an additional
form/information collection instrument, specifically the MSFC Form
4687/NASA Human Exploration Challenge Returning Vehicle Report and
Verification. In the spirit of continual improvement, teams are now
permitted to compete using rover vehicles from previous Rover
Challenge events, provided 50% percent of the combined total
structure and systems have been modified or replaced, MSFC Form
4687/NASA human Exploration Rover Challenge Returning Vehicle
Report and Verification is added to this information collection to
document the change. We believe the ability modify pre-used rover
vehicles for future events will increase the number of
respondents/participants and the associated burden.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
