FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR
DECENNIAL CENSUS PROGRAMS
Dear State Tribal Liaison:

The U.S. Census Bureau (Census Bureau) invites your state to participate in the 2020 Census
Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP). Do not miss your once-per-decade opportunity to
review and update state reservations, state designated tribal statistical areas (SDTSAs), and
census designated places (CDPs) as part of the 2020 Census PSAP.
We strongly encourage your participation in the 2020 Census PSAP for the following reasons:
• The federal government allocates over $675 billion in federal funds annually for
infrastructure, programs, and services based on Census Bureau data.
• Participation ensures that state recognized tribes in your state will gain valuable information
that will aid in making decisions about education, health services, and housing.
• The 2020 Census PSAP is your only opportunity to review and update state reservations,
SDTSAs, and CDPs for your state prior to the 2020 Census.
Action Steps:
1. Review the enclosed 2020 Census Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) Information
Guide to answer questions about PSAP and help your government prepare for participation.
2. Sign-up for the 2020 Census PSAP by filling out the enclosed State Tribal Liaison Contact
Update Form and State Recognized Tribes Update Form. Please return the completed forms in
the enclosed, postage-paid envelope or scan and e-mail the forms to [email protected],
within two weeks of receipt.
You can find statistical data for state recognized tribal areas in the Census Bureau’s My Tribal Area
application at https://www.census.gov/tribal/.
As the state tribal liaison, we ask that you reach out to the state recognized American Indian tribes to
inform them of this opportunity to document and legally define state reservation boundaries, as well as
the SDTSAs, and CDPs for their tribes, reservations, or trust lands.
has granted legal status to the state recognized tribes listed below. Please review the list
below for accuracy and return any modifications on the 2020 Census State Recognized Tribes Update
Form. If there are no modifications, please return the form stating NO CHANGE in boxes 1 and 2.
