Annual Survey of U.S. Ship and Boat Construction and Repair Facilities

Dear [President / Contact Name]:
Pursuant to the Merchant Marine Act, 1936, as amended, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) is
responsible for obtaining and maintaining current data on private sector facilities for the construction
and repair of ships, both commercial and military. This letter initiates the MARAD Annual Survey of
U.S. Ship and Boat Construction and Ship Repair Facilities for the calendar year 2018.
The information you provide will enable MARAD to more effectively respond to frequent requests for
shipyard facility data from U.S. and foreign shipowners, equipment manufacturers, consultants,
investment bankers and government officials and to meet the requirements for better public information.
The information will also be used to update an electronic database of U.S. shipyards. This database
covers the broad spectrum of capabilities of the construction and repair industry in the U.S. including
the building or repairing of barges, ferries, offshore supply vessels, oil rigs and other types of vessels.
In addition, the database describes facility capabilities and the types of vessels each yard has or is
capable of constructing.
Enclosed is the 2018 U.S. Ship and Boat Construction and Repair Facilities Package. Please complete
the forms enclosed. If you would like electronic fillable forms (Adobe) please email
and they will be emailed to you. Be sure to provide your mid-2018
employment and capital investment figures and complete the Graving dock and Floating drydock
characteristic summary sheets that will enable us to better understand your docking facilities. Please
also complete the electronic contact information sheet enclosed.
All information that you provide about your facility will be shared with the Department of the Navy.
Please be assured that business sensitive information will be maintained for internal use only and that
only summarized industry totals of such information will be released.
We would greatly appreciate it if you would complete and return the package using the enclosed
business reply envelope, by [Month, Day], 2018. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
