Brief BBS Instructions
-If you will not be able to conduct the survey, please contact your local BBS coordinator or national office ASAP.
- Select a run date within the window of acceptable dates provided on the reverse side. Routes must be run under satisfactory weather
conditions, good visibility, little or no precipitation, light winds. Make notes of stops where weather deviates.
- START EXACTLY ONE-HALF HOUR BEFORE SUNRISE. Official start time is printed on the reverse side.
- Routes should be completed within 4 - 5 hours. Observers should count birds for exactly 3 minutes at each stop; birds seen before or
after the 3-minute count period, or while traveling between stops, must not be counted, but may be noted in the comments section.
- ONE AND ONLY ONE PERSON, THE OBSERVER, IS PERMITTED TO IDENTIFY AND COUNT BIRDS.
- Count all individuals except young who are still dependent on their parents for food and/or protection (e.g., do not count begging
fledglings, the downy chicks of precocial species, etc.).
- Count all birds seen within 1/4 mile (0.4 km) or heard at any distance during the 3-minute count period. Observers should avoid
counting individuals already counted on previous stops.
- Write in any species not already listed on the form. Provide documentation for all write-ins not typically found in the area (check a field
guide map if unsure). Check the "Mig?" box if the species is not known to breed in the survey area.
- Please note the number of vehicles that pass, on the route's road only, during each 3-min stop. If you feel that constant excessive
noise other than passing vehicles (e.g., a nearby lawnmower, stream noise, distant roadway, etc.) seriously impaired your ability to hear
birds at a particular stop, please fill in the "excessive noise" bubble.

Always read the detailed instructions before running your route.
