SUBJECT: Justification for the use of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) in Air Force Recruiting
Information Support System-Total Force (AFRISS-TF), DITPR ID #12052
1. System / Form
The Air Force Recruiting Information Support System-Total Force (AFRISS-TF) is the Active Duty, Air
Force Reserve, and Air National Guard recruiting information system used by the Air Force Recruiting
Service. This system requires the collection of the SSN for all Air Force accessions to determine
qualification, eligibility and processing of new applicants into the Air Force military service.
2. Documentation
As documented in the AFRISS-TF System of Records Notice and the Privacy Impact Assessment,
AFRISS-TF is the sole information system utilized to collect information from new applicants seeking
entry into the Air Force to determine qualification, eligibility, and eventual processing for military
service.
3. Authorized Uses
The justifications for the use of the SSN in accordance with DoDI 1000.30, enclosure 2 are:
(3) Security Clearance Investigation or Verification: AFRISS-TF interfaces with the Office of
Personnel Management’s Joint Personnel Adjudication System. It is used in all aspects of the
security background investigation process. This process is required to gain further information
about an applicant’s background and to determine if there are existing criminal histories or
investigative records that may preclude the applicant from entering the Air Force.
(5) Confirmation of Employment Eligibility: AFRISS-TF, as the collection medium, has an
active interface with using the SSN to validate the employment eligibility of new applicants.
Validation is conducted with the physical social security card which indicates whether the
applicant is eligible or ineligible for employment within the United States. For males 18 years
and above only, the SSN is also required to validate their Selective Service registration status
through the Selective Service System which accepts SSN as the only verification identifier.
