THE NATIONAL HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY (NHIS)
What is the NHIS?
An Opportunity for You
The NHIS is the primary source of information on the
nation’s health.
Over the years, thousands of families across your
community, state, and country have helped the nation
by participating in this survey. Now it is your chance to
help—take part and make your voice heard!
As the country’s largest in-person household health
survey, the NHIS has been taking the pulse of the
nation since 1957.
Each Selected Household is Important
The Trusted Gold Standard
NHIS data are used to:
• Monitor progress towards national health objectives
• Evaluate health policies and programs
• Track changes in health behaviors and
health care use
The chances of being selected for this survey are
small. Once selected, each household represents
thousands of others. In other words, because we
cannot include everyone in the survey, your answers
represent the answers of other households like yours.
Your household is irreplaceable.
