Introduction:

Hi, I’m (first name)__________. I work with the US EPA and we’re conducting surveys as part of study about pond restoration. We’re interested in learning how people use this area and ways to improve the experience for visitors. Would you mind sharing some of your insights and experiences about this place? I’ll need only about 5 - 10 minutes of your time.

Participant Activity:

Survey Start Time: AM/PM

Questions:

1. How do you usually spend your time around this area - Pickle Pond, Barker’s Bay, the Osaugie Trail, or Barkers Island? (i.e., What do you like to do? How often do you come here?)

(Questions 1-2 are meant to link participant, use and a sense of place to help identify how the public relates to the AOC work area).

2. What is it about this area that attracts you? (e.g. location, types of amenities, recreational activities, inclusive environment, etc.)

3. Since you have been coming here (Pickle Pond, Barker's Bay, Barkers Bay Island, or the Osaugie Trail), what kind of changes in this area, if any, have you noticed or are you aware of? (e.g., physical changes you’ve noticed, changes in the appearance or health of the land and water, changes in who uses the area, or how it is used?)

(Questions 3-4 are meant to identify how community perceives changes in their environment and will help identify links between environmental changes and changes in community perceptions of well-being.

Please explain approximately when these changes occurred:

4. If you’ve noticed changes, how do they affect you? And, if you’re from the area, how do these changes affect your community? (e.g., How does it make you feel about spending time here? How does it make you feel about the community?)

5. Is there anything you would like to see changed?

(Questions 5-10 are meant to invite community voice and vision for area improvements and will provide data enabling us to compare community ideas/interests/concerns w/planning processes and decisions.)

6. Is there anything that could be done to make this area more inclusive?

(i.e., Are there visible or invisible barriers that could, or should, be addressed to make this an inviting, accessible and enjoyable area for all races, ethnicities, cultures, gender-orientations, economic classes, ages and abilities?)

7. How would the changes (that you would like to see) improve your experience, this area, or the community? (i.e., Would it be more inclusive, inviting, accessible, fun, enriching, safer, etc.?)

8. We’re just collecting information at this point, but if an opportunity came up, how would you be willing to participate in future decisions about changes to this area? (e.g., This could include just getting informational updates, participating in planning events, being a citizen scientist to collect data at the site, etc?)

9. And last, if you don’t mind sharing your zip code, this will help us learn more about local and visitor usage of the area.

Zip Code

Thank you for sharing your time, insights and experiences. We really appreciate hearing directly from the community and your responses will help us, and our partners (like the NERR over there and the City of Superior), learn what we’re doing well and how we might improve.

If you’d like to learn more about the area and what we’re doing, we have a card you can take with you – there’s a link to our website.

Thanks again - Enjoy the rest of your day. 😊
