AGENDA
The Next NSFG: Integrating a Household Survey with New Approaches for Data Collection
Meeting held April 30, 2018 (9 am to 5 pm) – May 1, 2018 (9 am to 2 pm)
--------Atlas Research
805 15th Street NW, Suite 910
Washington, DC 20005
Purpose
The National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) of the future will continue to be a householdbased survey using in-person interviewing as the primary mode of data collection. However, to
address challenges for response rates and data quality, this expert work group is convened to
explore new approaches for data collection to complement the household-based survey.
Desired Outcomes
 Achieve a better understanding of selected data collection approaches
 Learn and discuss benefits and challenges of each for NSFG subject areas
 Learn benefits and challenges of each data collection approach for implementation in the
NSFG
 Develop suggestions for the most promising data collection approaches for achieving
NSFG goals:
o How to use them to best leverage the core survey content
o How to use them to preserve and enhance data/sample quality as indicated by
response rates, non-response bias, and cost feasibility
Participants
 Researchers and senior survey staff with pertinent experience on data collection
approaches under consideration to complement NSFG’s household-based design
 Experts in survey research, including directors and principal investigators of surveys that
collect data on national samples of U.S adolescents and adults.
 Representatives from NSFG, OPA, and Atlas Research

Welcome, introductions, sharing of goals for the meeting
Anjani Chandra, NSFG; Kate Ahrens, OPA; Jamie Hart, Atlas Research, Facilitator
Overview of NSFG
Anjani Chandra & Joyce Abma, NSFG
 general background
 design/content summary under current contract
 basic survey plan envisioned for next contract
 brief summary of ideas and input so far on potential new features
Section 1: Use of other survey modes, such as internet/web surveys, to
complement household interview
 Expert sharing of background and examples from other surveys
 Discussion of specific applications to NSFG
o What other modes would best complement the information collected in the
existing NSFG household interview information?
Break
Section 1 (continued)
 Discussion of specific applications to NSFG (continued)
o In what ways could other modes be used? (e.g., data collection from nonresponders; more focused or follow-up content for specific subgroups;
enhanced data collection for particular topics)
o How would other modes, particularly web, reduce respondent burden? In
what ways would they affect response rate? How to address potential
coverage issues?
o How could other modes such as web enhance data quality in the face-to-face
interview by addressing non-response and non-response bias?
Break for Lunch
Section 2: Use of follow-up surveys for selected topics or subsamples (perhaps
involving other survey modes)
 Expert sharing of background and examples from other surveys
 Discussion of specific applications to NSFG
o What are the considerations for interview mode for a follow-up survey (e.g.,
web, face-to-face, etc.)? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?
o What types of NSFG information would benefit the most from a targeted follow
up interview approach? What are the optimal intervals for a follow-up survey
on these topics?
o How would these follow-up surveys be proposed, funded, vetted, and
implemented?
o When would these follow-up survey data be released, and by whom? (If by
NCHS, would they be expected to be released with main survey data)?

Section 3: Inclusion of supplements or modules that may be administered once or
periodically


Expert sharing of background and examples from other surveys



5:00 pm

Discussion of specific applications to NSFG
o What types of topics have typically been used for modules/supplements in
other surveys? What types of NSFG information would benefit most from
a module/supplement format?
o What are the advantages/disadvantages of using modules or
supplements to collect reproductive health information?
o How often would modules/supplements be released into the field? Would
supplements work within the NSFG given our annual sample sizes and 2year data release intervals?
o How would modules/supplements be proposed, funded, vetted and
implemented?
