SSN Justification

MA organizations must obtain the risk adjustment data required by CMS from the provider,
supplier, physician, or other practitioner that furnished the item or service as outlined in 42 CFR
422.310. The SSN and HICN are data collected and used in the development and application of
the risk adjustment payment model. The SSN is also used to validate the Health Insurance
Claim Number (HICN) when data is submitted by MA organizations.
