User Experience Testing of the CFData Website (user testing 1)

Facilitator-led Questions:

Instructions: Thank you for your participation in this user experience testing of the Child and Family Data Archive (CFData) website. Your feedback will help CFData assess and improve the website usability. I will lead you through the following questions and exercises over the next 60 minutes.

General Website Questions

In this first set of questions, we seek to understand your general understanding of the CFData website’s purpose and resources.

  1. Look over the website. What kinds of things can you do on this website?

  2. [If applicable] Since you have used this website before, can you tell me why you used it? Can you show me how you would do that/find that information?

Navigating Website Scenarios

The next set of questions will help us understand how users navigate the CFData website using common use scenarios.

  1. You read a paper that analyzed data from the [enter dataset name] dataset.

  2. Find the [enter dataset name] study.

  3. Find other publications that have been written from this dataset.

  4. You're interested in how the data were collected for the [enter dataset name] study. Find the user guide for that information.

Viewpoints on Website Pages and Tabs

The next set of questions assess whether the website’s navigation tabs and FAQs adequately help users find information and navigate the CFData website.

  1. What do you expect to find under the tab “Resources”? Did you find what you hoped to find? What would you like to see under that tab?

  2. What do you expect to find under the tab "Publications"? The CFData Bibliography has thousands of citations of works using that used data archived at CFData. The works include journal articles, books, book chapters, government, and agency reports, working papers, dissertations, conference papers, meeting presentations, unpublished manuscripts, magazine and newspaper articles, and audiovisual materials. Given that there are a variety of citations, do you think the term Publications is accurate? Would you use a different label?

  3. Now that you've spent some time exploring the site, please take a couple minutes to look at the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. Is there any information you feel should be included in the FAQs that is not there?

Overall Website Experience and Recommendations

The last set of questions are designed to gather feedback on what worked well and areas for improvement for the CFData website.

  1. What did you like, or what worked well on this website?

  2. What didn’t work very well? Do you have any suggestions for improving the website? Are there things you would like to be able to do on this site that it doesn’t offer?

BURDEN: The purpose of this information collection is to assess the usability of the Child and Family Data Archive (CFData) website and identify areas for improvement to better address the needs of the CFData audience.
