What is the purpose of this study?

RECS is the only comprehensive source of data about
home energy use in the United States and is valuable
for understanding future energy needs at the national,
state, and local levels. The information that you
provide will be used to develop and evaluate energy
policies, as well as to improve household products, like
refrigerators and air conditioners. You can learn more
about RECS at www.eia.gov/recs.

Why was my household selected?

Your home’s address was statistically selected at
random to represent up to a thousand other homes
similar to yours. For the results to be valid, another
home cannot be substituted for yours.

Will identifiable information about our home
be given to anyone else?

No. The information you provide will be used for
statistical purposes only and is confidential by law.
In accordance with the Confidential Information
Protection and Statistical Efficiency Act of 2018 and
other applicable Federal laws, your responses will
not be disclosed in identifiable form without your
consent. Every EIA employee, as well as every agent, is
subject to a jail term, a fine, or both if he or she willfully
discloses any identifiable information that you report.
