2022 ALFALFA SEED PRODUCTION
Alfalfa seed production in Montana for 2022 is estimated at 2.54 million pounds, an increase of 6 percent, or 142,000 pounds from last
year’s production estimate of 2.40 million pounds. Harvested area totaled 3,800 acres, a decrease of 200 acres from 2021. On average,
producers harvested 669 pounds of alfalfa seed per acre, up from 600 pounds per acre in 2021.
Producers who used leaf cutter bees used an average of 3.3 gallons of bees per acre, a decrease of 0.1 gallon from the rate of bees used
in 2021. Leaf cutter bees were used on 100 percent of the reported irrigated acreage this year, compared with 97 percent last year. Leaf
cutter bees were reportedly used on a very small percentage of non-irrigated acreage in 2022.
The average price received for the 2022 crop was $2.68 per pound, up $0.50 from last year’s average price, making the 2022 value of
production $6.81 million, compared with $5.23 million in 2021.
