Abstract: The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) seeks to advance an ambitious new learning agenda, published in 2023 in accordance with OMB’s directive to agencies to develop evidence-building plans, as described in OMB M-19-23 and OMB M-21-27. The IMLS learning agenda focuses on children’s reading literacy, the future of museums, and equity in grantmaking. The information collection included as part of this request is focused on the first two of these learning priorities: (1) investing in new research to deepen understanding of how libraries can foster youth engagement and love of reading (“Child Reading Literacy”) and (2) examining the roles that museums play in responding to climate change and other public emergencies and preserving the nation’s rich heritage through community engagement efforts, researcher networks, and research–practice partnerships (“Future of Museums”). To carry out this agenda, IMLS has contracted with Mathematica to conduct two independent studies of Child Reading Literacy and Future of Museums that will provide descriptive information about the characteristics of institutions and communities.
