SUBJECT: Non-substantive change notification for the Survey of Inmate in Local Jails (SILJ): OMB Control No: 1121-0098

DATE: February 13, 2025

PURPOSE:

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is notifying OMB of a non-substantive change to the Survey of Inmates in Local Jails (SILJ) under OMB Control No: 1121-0098 (expiration date 6/30/2027). The change complies with Executive Order (EO) 14168, Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government. The survey instrument will be modified to revise one question and eliminate five questions. The average duration of the interview (73 minutes) will remain unchanged, as the removed questions were based on the respondent identifying as a sex (S1Q9c) other than their sex at birth (original S1Q9a). The small sample of respondents who would have gone through this series of questions is unlikely to impact the overall interview length.
