The Census Bureau is amending the service fee we collect from applicants for the Age Search service. The Census Bureau will amend Title 15,â50.5, of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) to increase the fee for conducting a search of a census record from $65.00 to $155.00, and to increase the additional charge for expedited requests requiring search results within one day from $20.00 per case to $50.00 per case. This change is being made to reflect the actual operating costs associated with processing an Age Search request. The Census Bureau is also requesting to reinstate an expired information collection under OMB Control Number 0607-0117.
The purpose of Age Search service is to provide, upon request, transcripts of historical population census records. The Age Search census transcript provides proof of age to qualify individuals for Social Security or other retirements benefits; provides secondary proof of citizenship to apply for passports; provides proof of family relationships for documentation related to rights of inheritance; or satisfies other situations where a birth certificate is required but not available. The Age Search is a service provided by the National Processing Center and is a self-supporting operation of the Census Bureau. The Age Search service is designed to be a self-supporting operation, conducted in accordance with 13 U.S.C. 8(a).
The Census Bureau is reporting three changes to this reinstatement of the expired information collection from the last renewal done in fiscal year 2022. The changes are total burden change for this reinstatement; fee structure change; and adding minor updates to the forms such as adding the alternative for choosing the 2020 Census for a census record search.
