The National Wastewater Surveillance System collects community-level wastewater samples to detect and track respiratory viruses and other emerging infectious diseases, with the goal of informing timely public health action. Participating health departments, utilities, and laboratories collect and test grab or composite wastewater samples (at least weekly) for pathogen RNA/DNA, submit concentration and sequencing data to CDC platforms (1CDP and AMD), and may upload sewershed spatial files and de-identified clinical crosswalks. Data from wastewater surveillance will be used to track infection trends or disease presence in communities where samples are collected and serve to inform the general public of disease risks, and as an independent data source to alert public health officials and professionals.
This Revision includes adjustments to the instruments and the burden.
