Abstract: CONGRESS HAS MANDATED THE COLLECTION OF NATIONAL ASSESSMENT SURVEY DATA. NEW BACKGROUND QUESTIONS FOR THE 1983-84 WRITING ASSESSMENT WILL BE FIELD-TESTED THIS FALL TO DETERMINE THEIR CLARITY AND APPROPRIATENESS. THE INFORMATION WILL BE USED BY NATIONAL ASSESSMENT TO GUIDE ITEM REVISION, REVIEW AND SELECTION FOR THE FULL WRITING ASSESSMENT.
