Abstract: PUBLICLY OWNED TREATMENT WORKS REQUIRING A WAIVER FROM SECONDARY TREATMENT STANDARDS UNDER THE CLEAN WATER ACT MUST MUST APPLY ANNUALLY TO EPA FOR A VARIANCE. THE APPLICATION DESCRIBES CHARACTERISTICS OF DISCHARGES FROM WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS, RECEIVING WATER QUALITY & OTHER ECOLOGICAL DATA. EPA USES THE INFORMATION TO ENSURE THAT THE PROPOSED DISCHARGE WILL NOT ADVERSELY AFFECT THE RECEIVING WATERS' ECOSYSTEM OR BENEFICIAL USES.
