ACTION OF MAY 5, 1985 EXTENDING OMB APPROVAL OF INFORMATION
COLLECTION REQUIREMENTS RELATING TO THE RETENTION OF FIREARMS
RECORDS (27 CFR 178.128) PROVIDED BATF WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO
RESOLVE THE RETENTION ISSUE IN CONJUNCTION WITH ISSUES RAISED BY
THE PUBLIC CONCERNING DUPLICATION AMONG THE COLLECTIONS AND THE
PRACTICAL UTILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL COLLECTIONS FOUND IN OMB DOCKET
NUMBERS 1512-0006, 1512-0129, 1512-0130, AND 1512-0387. ALTHOUGH
SOME PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE, THESE ISSUES HAVE NOT AS YET BEEN
RESOLVED. WE, THEREFORE, AGAIN FIND IT NECESSARY TO APPROVE A
EXTENTION TO PROVIDE TIME FOR THE RESOLUTION OF OUTSTANDING
ISSUES.

THE RETENTION PERIOD FOR FIREARMS
RECORDS REQUIRED TO BE KEPT BY FIREARMS LICENSEES WAS REDUCED BY
REGULATIONS PUBLISHED ON JUNE 28, 1985. THE PERIOD OF RETENTION IS
CONSIDERED MINIMAL IN ORDER TO PROPERLY SERVE LAW ENFORCEMENT
ENTITIES.
