10/1987 with the understanding that the Department wi submit a
revised supporting statement for the next request for clearan of
the Current Population Survey (CPS) that indicates in summary form
the importance of the CPS as a source of labor force data. The
statement should include a set of published tables that are
illustrati of the form in which labor force data that are derived
from the CPS ar released monthly and at other frequencies, a
description of the more important data uses, and a discussion of
significant public and Federa agency proposals, if any, for
modifications to the basic collection. Also, BLS should be prepared
to discuss how it will meet the evaluatio requirement contained in
OMB Statistical Poicy Directive No. 3 which, for the CPS, is
scheduled for October 1988.

THE CURRENT POPULATION SURVEY IS THE
PRIMARY SOURCE OF ESTIMATES OF EMPLOYMENT, UNEMPLOYMENT, AND OTHER
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CIVILIAN NONINSTITUTIONAL POPULATION AND
VARIOUS SUBGROUPS OF THAT POPULATION. GOVERNMENT POLICYMAKERS AND
LEGISLATORS USE THESE RESULTS AS IMPORTANT INDICATORS OF OUR
NATION'S ECONOMIC SITUATION AND FOR PLANNING AND EVALUATING MANY
GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS.
