THE MARINE MAMMAL PROTECTION ACT OF
1972 ALLOWED ALASKAN NATIVES LIVING ALONG THE COAST TO HARVEST
POLAR BEAR, SEA OTTER, AND WALRUS FOR SUBSTANCE AND HANDICRAFT
PURPOSES. MANDATORY MARKING, TAGGING, AND REPORTING REGULATIONS
WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE LEVEL OF HARVEST AND THE HEALTH OF
THESE POPULATIONS, THUS ASSISTING THE SERVICE IN MAKING MANAGEMENT
DECISIONS RELATED TO THESE SPECIES.
