TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC'S HEALTH, ATSDR IS ESTABLISHING A NATIONAL SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM WHICH DESCRIBES THE IMPACT OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES EMERGENCIES ON THE PUBLIC'S HEALTH. THIS INFORMATION IS USED TO EXAMINE THE DISTRIBUTION OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES EMERGENCIES, DESCRIBE THE TYPE AND CAUSE OF MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY OF THOSE AFFECTED, AND DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO REDUCE SUBSEQUENT MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY.
