Lifesaving, fire protection, and emergency equipment must be identified as to its manufacturer, model number, capacity, approval number, and other information concerning its per- formance. Markings (identification) are used by the vessel and Coast Guard to determine compliance with regulations. In addition, manufacturers are required to produce and vessel operators are required to use instructional material for life- saving, fire protection, and emergency equipment. Manuals are needed for the crew to properly maintain and operate vessel equipment.
