In its contracts for construction, alteration and repair of ships, the Department of Commerce requires each selected contractor to procure and maintain insurance as specified in the CAR clause 1352.217-109, "Insurance Requirements." The clause also requires the contractor to submit proof of this insurance to the contracting officer before the work under the contract is authorized to start.
