NIOSH has responsibility under section 21 of the OSHA Act and 29 CFR 1920.1043 for approving courses for training technicians in pulmonary function testing. Successful completion of a NIOSH-approved training course is mandatory for technicians performing lung function tests on workers in the cotton dust industry. To carry out its statutory and regulatory responsibilities, NIOSH maintains a Pulmonary Function Testing Course Approval Program.
