In accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 and 5 CFR 1320.11, OMB is not approving this information collection at this time. OMB has concerns about the need, practical utility, and burden of this information collection which it hopes will be resolved in the final rulemaking. Rule 17a-4, which took effect in 1940, requires broker-dealers to preserve certain books and records for prescribed periods of time. The Commission is proposing amendments to Rule 17a-4 that would clarify the current requirements of such Rule, that would require broker-dealers to preserve certain additional records, and that would require broker-dealers to make certain books and records available in each of their local offices.
