BLM manages impacts from exploration and mining authorized by the Mining Law on Public Lands, including wilderness study areas, designated wilderness areas, lands within the California desert conservation area, and lands within wild and scenic river corridors. BLM accomplishes this by reviewing proposed operations to determine if the activities will prevent unnecessary or undue degradation of Federal resources or will impair the suitability of lands for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. BLM reduces risk of unnecessary or undue degradation by requiring mandatory bonds from operators.
