This ICR summarizes the burden imposed upon the States and Indian Tribes for the assessment of hazardous waste sites. EPA uses a multi-phase evaluation porcess to determine and implement the appropriate responses to release of hazardous substances to the environment. The phases include principally pre-CERCLIS screening, a Preliminary Assessment, Site Investigation, an Expanded Site Inpection, and preparation of the Hazardous Ranking System package. In addition, Integrated Removal Assessments can be utilized in connection with above phase in order to speed up the assessment process.
