The NHSDA is a survey of the civilian,
noninstitutionalized population of the United States, age 12 and
over. The data are used to estimate the prevalence of cigarette,
alcohol, and illicit drug use and abuse of illicit drugs. Results
are used by SAMHSA, ONDCP, and other Federal agencies and other
researchers and organizations to establish policy, direct program
activities, and better allocate resources. Beginning in 1999, the
survey includes an expanded tobacco module, and the sample is
expanded to provide State level estimates for all States and the
District of Columbia. The household screening and interview

the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
